TEEN TALK with Pastor McCoy
I
recently was preaching at "The Wilds," in Brevard,
North Carolina, and had the opportunity to speak
with Rand Hummel. Rand is a counselor and speaker
for The Wilds ministries. He is a much
sought-after speaker to teens. He has been in
most of the Christian colleges and has such a great
message for teenagers.
One of
his most requested sermons is called, "The Dark Side
of the Internet." He gave me a copy that my
wife and I listened to on the way home, and it was
an eye-opening experience for both of us. In this
message he explains that the devil has gotten his
hands on a "Weapon of Mass Destruction,"--that being
the internet. He goes on to explain about how
myspace.com is destroying young people all over the
world. He said that he is in constant demand
for counseling sessions with teens concerning their
misuse of the computer.
In a
session that he was teaching, he opened up an
opportunity to ask questions so I raised my hand.
I asked him what was the difference between myspace
and facebook? He said that facebook was much
safer because you control who is able to talk with
you. But, even then, he said it can be a great
time waster if you are not careful.
Let me
give you some pointers that he said would help
protect you should you choose to go online . . .
1.
Never go online with myspace . . . very dangerous.
(ABC's 20/20, said that myspace is a predator
website).
2.
Never accept people on to your "Friend's List" that
you don't know.
3.
Put on your web site that you are a Christian.
4.
Get your computer out of your bedroom and out into
the open.
5.
Talk to your parents and keep them informed about
what you are doing and to whom you are talking.
6.
Keep God first in everything you do. If you
can't honor God, then you know it is not right.
Would the Lord Jesus Christ feel welcome online with
you?
I am
so concerned about our young people being on bad
websites. Just going online out of curiosity
can be very dangerous. I am not your enemy!
I love you much and hope the best for you. It
has been my prayer for God to send revival among our
teenagers. This will never happen unless we
clean up our lives and our minds. If you ever
need to talk . . . I am here!
