The Main Thing
When I was in Bible college, I heard a message from Dr. Tolbert Moore that still rings in my ears to this day. His message was "Don't Forget the Main Thing," and it brought such conviction to my heart. I remember asking God for help at the altar at the end of the chapel service. I remember how busy I was in college: playing football, serving as student body vice-president, singing and traveling in one of the school ensembles, dating my fiancee', and studying for school. I was so busy; yet I had to be reminded to keep the "Main Thing" the "Main Thing."
Now it's thirty years later and those words are still knocking at my heart's door. We get so busy doing good things that we sometimes forget the main thing. I mean, we get so wrapped up in ministry that we forget our whole purpose.
The enemy of the best is the good. The best thing that we could ever do is to win someone to Christ. Personal soulwinning is still a Bible command. Making hospitals calls, counseling those in need, making sure everyone is in the right place, helping people who are hurting, encouraging others to be right with God, keeping the school on track--these are all good things that must be done. But, those are not the BEST things. Those are things that are necessary in the ministry but we must not forget the "Main Thing."
When I was preaching in a Sword Conference with Dr. Shelton Smith last week, he brought a message along these lines that really started me thinking. I hit the altar again and asked God to help me keep the "Main Thing" the "Main Thing."
