You Never Know
This past week, I was preaching in North Carolina when I received the news that my dad had a malignant tumor under his arm and several in his neck and chest. To be perfectly honest, I was somewhat taken back. I called my dad; and we cried together, laughed together, and prayed together. Our time was sweet. My dad will be 80 years old next month. He has always been so health-conscious and attentive to what is good and bad for him, and that is why we were all so surprised. I am so amazed at the faith of my father. My dad's spirit is overwhelmingly positive. He is such a great example of grace, faith, and truth.
The Bible teaches us not to boast of tomorrow: "...for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth." None of us know what we might face in these uncertain days ahead. I try not to worry about tomorrow but rather focus on this day. There is so much today that we can do for God. Why worry about something over which we have no control?
What we need to do is to focus on the certainties of life and not the uncertainties. It is certain that God is in control. It is certain that Christ died for the ungodly. It is certain that Jesus Christ is coming again. It is certain that we all have an appointment with death. With all this in mind, let's go forward, serving the God of heaven. My dad told me, "Son, my faith is not moved, I'm not afraid, I know my redeemer liveth." This is the kind of attitude we all need. Let's serve Him today. I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future. Oh, and by the way, remember, "It Pays to Serve God!"
